“I follow these inspiring lines which I learned from my father and guru E.V Prabhakaran, who taught me the importance of hard work, honesty, discipline, and respect for others. There is no substitute for sincere work which gives you the utmost happiness. Each incomplete work was my lesson for the burning desire to make my next beautiful craft.” says Shalu E. P., the owner of Adilekhas Antiqs in Thiruvalla, India.
Shalu E. P. is the maker of the finest customized Kerala handicrafts and decorative products without compromising the quality. These include all types of amazing toy boats like Chundan Vallam (Snake Boat), Odi Vallam, Vadakkanody Vallam, Thekkanodi Vallam, Kochu Vallam and country-boats like Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, and Veppu Vallam, etc.
Adilekhas Antiqs is a unique and different place where you can buy Chavittu Chakram (Water Wheel), Kala Vandi (Bullock Cart), and other stunning handmade crafts, decor accessories for your beautiful home and office.
Each piece of handicraft made by him represents grace, tradition, ethnicity, diversity, and rich culture of Kerala. All his handicrafts are extremely remarkable and your beautiful house deserves just that sort of antique piece.
At the age of 12, he started carpentry and did all types of wooden work. It’s his passion to create something new each day that led him to work in all districts of Kerala. In 1989, Shalu E. P. started searching to learn about boat making and visited a few places in Alappuzha. After some time he kept this interest aside and involved in carpentry work as usual.
Again it all started with a Chundan Vallam’s (Snake Boat) photograph showed by one of his friend’s relative while working in Kottayam. He asked for more photos and tried making it, for which he failed each time.
He traveled to different locations to see the process and meet the boat makers. But no one conferred him proper directions, calculations, or anything insightful required in carpentering his real boat. There were days when he left his daily work for boat making and faced a huge financial crisis, but nothing lasted for long in front of his dedication and willingness to earn his dream.
The man of steely will power learned everything by himself observing large boats’ designs and details. He failed many times and was fed up with imperfect shapes of wooden pieces during the making process but he never gave up.
However, the story has taken a turn. Today he is capable to make any kind of customized boat, be it big or small with perfection and his gallery Adilekhas Antiqs is a pride of place with unique, original creative characteristics and an unsurpassed sense of colors.
“There was a time when I used to travel daily carrying 20-25 toy boats for selling and unfortunately people didn’t buy a single piece. I felt so disappointed and stopped that routine, then realized that no one would give value when you urge them to buy no matter it is expensive or cheap.” Recalls Shalu E. P.
From then onwards he showcases everything in his amazing gallery Adilekhas Antiqs in Thiruvalla. His masterpieces crossed the international borders and reached different parts of the world including the United States of America, Canada, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, etc.
People from across India including Delhi, Haryana, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru come to buy his masterpieces that symbolize the beauty of vibrant arts and rich traditional culture of Kerala.
His handicraft collection depicts a strong bond to the incredible heritage of Kerala. These unique crafts on bright and beautiful walls go a long way in enhancing the interiors of any house. There is something made for you in his exclusive gallery waiting to add that special touch to your home décor and you have no reason to hold yourself back.
An avid reader of literature and a follower of Gandhian philosophy Shalu E. P. says that “Never misuse your talent gifted by the God and love whatever work you do.”
